The installed capacity of new energy in the five southern provinces and regions has exceeded 190 million kilowatts

Recently, it was learned from Southern Power Grid that as of the end of 2024, the total installed capacity of new energy in five southern provinces and regions including Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, and Hainan has exceeded 190 million kilowatts, reaching 192 million kilowatts, firmly ranking as the largest power source in Southern Power Grid. Among them, the installed capacity of wind power is 60.28 million kilowatts, the installed capacity of integrated photovoltaics is 78.72 million kilowatts, and the installed capacity of distributed photovoltaics is 43.13 million kilowatts.
In 2024, the five southern provinces and regions added 59.32 million kilowatts of new energy installed capacity, setting a new historical high and accounting for 82% of the new power installed capacity. Among them, 49.18 million kilowatts of new photovoltaic power generation installed capacity and 9.52 million kilowatts of new wind power installed capacity were added. The total electricity generation from various new energy sources reached 245.5 billion kilowatt hours throughout the year, a year-on-year increase of 36%. The wind and photovoltaic power generation both exceeded 100 billion kilowatt hours.
From a regional perspective, by the end of 2024, the proportion of new energy installed capacity in Guangxi and Hainan exceeded 40%, Yunnan accounted for over 30%, and Guangdong and Guizhou accounted for nearly 30%.
Yang Zaimin, Deputy Director of the New Energy Institute of Southern Power Grid Energy Research Institute, analyzed that since the 14th Five Year Plan, the average annual growth rate of new energy installed capacity in the southern region has been nearly 39%. Especially in the past two years, the installed capacity of new energy has doubled. Among them, distributed photovoltaics have seen significant growth, accounting for over one-third of the total installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation. Distributed photovoltaic power generation will continue its large-scale development trend in the future; In the field of offshore wind power, Guangdong has firmly maintained its leading advantage in installed capacity, while Guangxi and Hainan have achieved “zero breakthrough” in offshore wind power installation by 2024. The southern region has officially formed a new pattern of parallel rise and vigorous development of offshore wind power in Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan.
Under the high-speed growth trend of new energy installation and penetration rate reaching a historic high, by 2024, the utilization rate of new energy in the five southern provinces and regions will reach 98.8%, and the consumption level will maintain a leading position in the country.
Since the implementation of the ecological cultivation plan for the value of new energy power prediction for more than three years, the short-term and ultra short term prediction accuracy of the entire network of Southern Power Grid has reached 91.2% and 89.4% respectively, creating conditions for the cross provincial consumption of new energy. Wang Haohuai, manager of the Hydropower and New Energy Department of the Southern Power Grid Power Dispatching Control Center, said that starting from January 2025, the cultivation of new energy power prediction in Southern Power Grid will introduce AI models such as “Big Watt” and “Wind Wu” to improve prediction accuracy, support the participation of new energy in market transactions, and turn new energy generation into high-quality electricity that supports power supply.
To address the challenges brought by the large-scale integration of new energy into the grid, Southern Power Grid Corporation will also upgrade its new energy dispatch and operation management platform to version 2.0. In addition to aggregating data on power generation, forecasting, meteorology, etc., the platform will also use digital means to dynamically analyze the operating situation and consumption risks. At the same time, it will conduct statistical analysis on the production and operation of new energy storage, distributed and other new formats, further enhancing the observability, measurability, adjustability and controllability of new energy, and ensuring reliable power supply and maximum consumption of new energy from all aspects of source grid load storage.

Beijing Ecological Clean Small Watershed Point ‘Water’ Becomes’ Gold ‘

Recently, the signing ceremony for the value realization of the first batch of two ecological clean small watershed soil and water conservation ecological products in Beijing was held, with a total transaction amount of 21.69 million yuan.
Beijing is the first city in China to carry out the construction of ecologically clean small watersheds, and has built 466 ecologically clean small watersheds. At present, Beijing is actively exploring and promoting the mechanism for realizing the value of ecological products in “ecologically clean small watersheds”.
70% of the transaction amount is used for watershed management
Near the Balidian Ecological Clean Small Watershed in Shenjiaying Town, Yanqing District, Beijing, the ecological forest stands tall and straight, with the clear Guishui River flowing and the sunlight shining on the forest paths, forming an ecological picture of forest water interdependence.
The Balidian Ecological Clean Small Watershed is one of the first pilot projects in Beijing to realize the value of soil and water conservation ecological products. It covers an area of approximately 37 square kilometers and is surrounded by 20 villages. Xia Zhijun, Deputy Mayor of Shenjiaying Town, Yanqing District, introduced that in recent years, the ecological clean small watershed in Balidian has improved its infrastructure construction and ecological environment by implementing measures such as river dredging, economic forest construction, village greening and beautification, garden tree and shrub planting, and riverbank garbage collection. The riverbank has become lush and green.
The product of this transaction is the franchise and usage rights for a specific area in Shenjiaying Town, Balidian Ecological Clean Small Watershed for the next 6 years. The transferor of the transaction is the People’s Government of Shenjiaying Town, and the transferee is Beijing Xiadu Landscape and Greening Co., Ltd. The transaction amount is 10.44 million yuan, benefiting more than 3800 local villagers. Liu Wanjun, the mayor of Shenjiaying Town, stated that 70% of the transaction amount will be used for subsequent ecological management of the watershed, and 30% will be given back to local villagers.
The other ecological clean small watershed signed this time is the ecological clean small watershed of Hongluogu, Fangshan District. The trading product is the three-year franchise right of Mount Huangshan Dian Village in the ecological clean small watershed of Hongluogu. The transferor is the Economic Cooperative of Mount Huangshan Dian Village, Zhoukoudian Town, Fangshan District, Beijing, and the transferee is Beijing Zhoukoudian Asset Management Company. The transaction price is 11.25 million yuan, which will benefit 1300 local villagers in 450 households.
Sun Jialei, a second level researcher of Fangshan District Water Affairs Bureau, said that the small watershed of Hongluo Valley covers a total area of about 23 square kilometers, involving three administrative villages: Mount Huangshan Dian Village, Shuanmazhuang Village, and Louzishui Village, of which Mount Huangshan Dian Village was awarded the honorary title of “Water Beauty Home” in 2023. Since 2008, Fangshan District has actively promoted the management of small watersheds. In the Hongluo Valley small watershed, projects such as terrace renovation, agricultural field production roads, river improvement, water-saving irrigation, and village beautification have been implemented successively. The ecological environment quality of villages has been significantly improved, and the value of soil and water conservation ecological products has been significantly enhanced.
466 ecologically clean small watersheds have been built in Beijing
The so-called ecological clean small watershed refers to the use of watershed as a unit to scientifically and reasonably carry out measures such as soil erosion control, watershed water system improvement, non-point source pollution prevention and control, and human settlement environment improvement, in order to achieve coordinated development of ecological production and life, effective protection and rational utilization of soil and water resources, a virtuous cycle of the ecosystem, improved disaster prevention and reduction capabilities, harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, and high-quality economic and social development in the region.
Beijing is divided into 1085 small watersheds, including 576 in mountainous areas and 509 in plain areas. As of now, a total of 466 ecologically clean small watersheds have been built in Beijing, achieving clear water flow from the mountains to the rivers and reservoirs. The annual soil erosion area in the city has decreased from 3202.86 square kilometers in 2011 to 1671.12 square kilometers in 2024, with a soil and water conservation rate of 89.82%, significantly improving the water ecology and living environment in the region. The ecological function of soil and water conservation continues to improve, and the ecosystem has reached a virtuous cycle, laying a solid foundation for promoting value transformation.
Actively exploring the value realization of “ecologically clean small watersheds”
For many years, Beijing has always adhered to the practice of “ecological clean small watersheds” as a practical path to practice “green mountains and clear waters are as valuable as mountains of gold and silver”, actively exploring and promoting the mechanism for realizing the value of ecological products in “ecological clean small watersheds”.
The value conversion of ecological products for soil and water conservation in ecologically clean small watersheds must adhere to the principle of prioritizing protection and rational utilization. Liu Dagen, Director of the Water Conservation and Ecology Department of the Beijing Municipal Water Affairs Bureau, stated that in the next step, Beijing will continue to strengthen water ecological protection and restoration, vigorously build beautiful and happy rivers and lakes, comprehensively promote the comprehensive management and efficiency improvement of small watersheds, continue to enhance the supply capacity of ecological products in ecologically clean small watersheds, continuously explore and improve the path of government led, enterprise and social participation, market-oriented operation, and sustainable realization of water ecological product value, and build a more powerful support system for the realization of ecological product value.
